Best Gas Stoves in Singapore: Portable Stoves and Built-In Hobs Compared

How to choose a gas stove in Singapore: portable butane stoves and the SAFETY Mark, built-in gas hobs, burners, gas type and licensed installation.

"Gas stove" covers two different products in Singapore: portable butane stoves that run on small canisters, and built-in or freestanding gas hobs connected to town gas or an LPG cylinder. The right choice depends on where and how you cook. This guide explains both, with the safety checks that matter most.

An earlier version of this article listed mostly camping and outdoor stoves sold overseas. We could not confirm that those models are sold in Singapore today, so we have removed the product list instead of guessing. We have not tested any stoves ourselves, and we do not list prices because they change often.

Portable butane stoves

Portable stoves use butane canisters and are popular for steamboat and hotpot at home, small balcony or camping use, and as a backup when the main hob is not working.

SAFETY Mark

Singapore regulates portable butane stoves and gas canisters as controlled goods. The Consumer Product Safety Office advises that both the stove and the canister should carry the SAFETY Mark, which shows the product has been registered and tested. Check for it before you buy.

Safe use

The official safety guidance includes these points:

  • Use pans that match the size recommended in the manual. Oversized pans or griddles can trap heat and overheat the canister.
  • Keep the stove in a well-ventilated area with clear space around it, and never use two stoves side by side in a way that reflects heat onto a canister.
  • Remove the canister after use, cap the valve, and store it somewhere cool and away from flames.
  • If you smell gas, turn everything off, put out any flames and contact your authorised dealer.

What to look for

  • Safety features: an automatic cut-off that stops the flow of gas if the canister overheats, and a canister lock that stops it being installed wrongly.
  • Heat output: higher output boils water faster, but check the stove's rating against the size of your pot.
  • Stability: a wide base and a stable pot support, particularly for heavy pots.
  • Portability: weight, a carry case and the size of the canister it takes.
  • Indoor or outdoor use: check the manual, because some stoves are meant for outdoor use only.

Built-in and freestanding gas hobs

Gas type

Homes in Singapore can use town gas through a pipeline or LPG from cylinders. A hob is set up for one gas type, and a conversion kit may be needed to change it, so confirm the gas type in your home before you buy.

Installation

Under Singapore's Gas Act, installing, testing, maintaining and repairing gas appliances such as cookers must be done by a Licensed Gas Service Worker, who certifies the appliance is safe afterwards. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) issues the licences. Hiring an unlicensed worker for this work is an offence. Ask to see the licence and do not attempt to install a gas hob yourself.

Hob features

  • Number of burners: two to four is typical. Count how many pots you use at once.
  • Burner power: a high-output burner suits wok cooking, while a simmer burner helps with sauces.
  • Flame failure device: a safety feature that cuts gas if the flame goes out. It is worth having.
  • Ignition: auto ignition is more convenient than manual ignition.
  • Surface: glass looks neat but can crack from impact. Stainless steel is hardier, though it shows scratches. Choose a surface that you find easy to clean.
  • Cast iron pan supports: sturdier, and better for heavy woks.
  • Width: match the hob to the cut-out in your countertop and to the width of your cooker hood.

Ventilation

A gas hob needs adequate ventilation and a suitable cooker hood, because gas produces combustion by-products as well as cooking fumes. See our guide to choosing a cooker hood.

Gas stove versus induction

Gas gives instant visible heat and works with any cookware, and is the traditional choice for wok cooking. Induction is typically easier to clean and offers precise temperature control but needs compatible cookware. See our induction cooker guide for the other side.
